How to Treat Damaged Hair

You know damaged hair when you see it—and feel it. You might have visible breakage and split ends, dry hair that’s brittle to the touch, an overall dull and lifeless style, and probably some extra frizz. Before you can begin to repair your damaged hair, you have to admit you most likely have a problem.

Treating damaged hair requires a combination of nurturing practices and using appropriate hair care products. Here are some steps to help you restore and improve the condition of damaged hair:

  • Trim split ends: Start by getting a trim to remove split ends. Regular trims every 6-8 weeks can help prevent further splitting and breakage.
  • Use gentle hair care products: Opt for shampoos and conditioners that are specifically formulated for damaged or dry hair. Look for products that are sulfate-free and contain nourishing ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, or keratin.
  • Limit heat styling: Excessive heat from styling tools like flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers can further damage your hair. Minimize heat styling and, when you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant spray or serum beforehand.
  • Air dry whenever possible: Allow your hair to air dry instead of using heat styling tools whenever possible. If you must use a blow dryer, use the cool or low heat setting and keep the dryer at a safe distance from your hair.
  • Be gentle when brushing: Use a wide-toothed comb or a brush with soft bristles to detangle your hair gently. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling and causing additional breakage.
  • Deep conditioning treatments: Incorporate regular deep conditioning treatments into your hair care routine. Apply a nourishing hair mask or deep conditioner once or twice a week to replenish moisture and repair damage. Leave the treatment on for the recommended time and rinse thoroughly.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Minimize the use of chemical treatments such as relaxers, perms, or excessive hair dyeing. These processes can weaken and damage the hair shaft. If you do color your hair, consider opting for less damaging alternatives like semi-permanent dyes or highlights.
  • Protect from environmental factors: Shield your hair from harmful UV rays, chlorine, and saltwater. Wear a hat or use UV protection sprays when spending time in the sun. Rinse your hair thoroughly and apply a leave-in conditioner before swimming in chlorinated pools or the ocean.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Good nutrition plays a role in maintaining healthy hair. Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Foods like fish, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables can promote hair health.
  • Patience and time: Remember that hair repair takes time and consistency. Be patient with your hair and continue with a healthy hair care routine to gradually restore its strength and vitality.
